Delaware OH History

The area that would become Delaware used to be inhabited by the Shawnee and Mingo tribes.

In 1804, Moses Byxbe arrived in the area from Massachusetts. He had land grants from the U.S. government. In 1808, the area was designated as a town, with around 200 people. Byxbe was a driving factor in the early development and shaping of Delaware, Ohio.

After the War of 1812, many settlers migrated to Delaware, most notably the parents of Rutherford B. Hayes, who was president of the US from 1877-1881. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, and he met his future wife at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Before the Civil War, abolitionists brought the Underground Railroad through the area. Many stops on the Underground Railroad in Delaware County still exist today, and people can take a self guided driving tour.

In 1851, a railroad through the town was built in 1851 as part of the Cleveland-Columbus-Cincinnati track. This helped the town prosper and businesses flourished.

Today people in Delaware, Ohio can still enjoy charming architecture and history thanks to the preservation of the Historic District of Downtown Delaware. Residents enjoy strolling down the street and stopping in nice shops, restaurants, and brew pubs. In fact, Downtown Delaware has been awarded a “Great Place in Ohio” designation.
