Powell’s History

Powell was originally settled back in 1801 and was called Middlebury. In 1850, the name was changed to Hall’s Corner, after the landowner Thomas R. Hall purchased more land for the town and constructed a general store.

In 1857, the town’s name was once again changed, this time to the name we know today, Powell. It was named this in honor of the Ohio judge who approved of the settlement officially becoming a village.

Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s multiple railroads were built through the village, and it was officially incorporated in 1947. However, the population remained small until Columbus’ suburban expansion reached the area, and large neighborhood developments began construction in the now city.
